Interviews and tests run at the university. Further interviews and tests in Leeds. (1975)

To have a career in computing.

Being flexible and taking on different roles and responsibilities.

In house courses ranging from team building to specific computer language courses and management courses.

They gave me the starting point from which I could launch my career.

How very important is the relationships we have with other team members.

My advice to students considering work

Be open minded. Where you start in a company is not necessarily where you will finish.

My advice about working in my industry

Working for a large computer company can give you more opportunities to try different roles.

What I do

Support and write software running on large mainframe computers.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Knowledge of computer languages, first gained at university and subsequently acquired on training courses. Communication skills which were developed whilst doing the job. The ability to get on with a diverse team of people also learnt whilst doing the job.

What I like most

Resolving problems in a software environment.

What I like least

The inevitable administrative functions.

What surprised me most

That the people I work with make the biggest difference to the job I do.
