A day in the life of a International Correspondent in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Personal contacts

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I would like to write for a national newspaper, covering general news/politics.

My advice to students considering work

Don't worry if uni isn't proving to be the best years of your life. I had an okay time at York but never felt that excited by life there. Things got a lot more interesting when I left uni, moved out of home properly and got a full-time job.

What I do

I work for a monthly trade magazine. In general, I produce a couple of news stories a week and a couple of feature articles a month. My duties include writing, editing, copy editing, conducting interviews and attending relevant events like press briefings and conferences.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Degree skills:
I developed good research skills.

Extracurricular skills:
Business and finance knowledge. News/feature writing and editing skills. I picked these skills up on the job.

What I like most

Lovely working environment. Freedom to develop my own story/feature ideas. Opportunity to travel abroad.

What I like least

What would I change? I'd prefer to write about something more interesting to me.
