A day in the life of a Major Projects Director in the United Kingdom

Major projects director at Virgin Trains East Coast

My career goals when I graduated

Hazy and indistinct!

My career history

I started my career working for the Foreign Office where I stayed for 8 years including 3 great years working in Russia. I then took a year out to do an MA back at the University in Archaeological Heritage Management. Since 1999 I've worked for the East Coast rail franchise in four different guises and numerous roles.

What has helped my career to progress

Being flexible, willing to try out new challenges and not expecting anything to be handed to me on a plate

Courses taken since graduation

MA in Archaeological Heritage Management

How my studies have helped my career

Being able to write clearly, coherently and communicate well with people

What surprised me about my career so far

Everything!

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Still living in York - I came back in 1999 and live here with my family

What I do

I'm Major Projects Director at Virgin Trains East Coast. We operate the train services between London and Yorkshire, the North-East and Scotland including to/from York. My role involves the procurement of a new fleet of trains for our business, the development of our stations and the introduction of a new in-cab signalling system.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Working collaboratively, trying to see others' points of view and acting commercially amongst a number

What I like most

Meeting customers and transforming the whole experience of travel through new trains and better stations

What I like least

Disruption to our service....railways depend on being reliable

What surprised me most

The extent to which the railway is critical to the economic and social success of the towns and cities it serves
