How my studies have helped my career
A mathematics degree is not a formal requirement in order to become a maths teacher but the fact I have studied mathematics to a high level does allow me a certain confidence in my subject knowledge, which is definitely a must.
The PGCE is the most commonly accepted and recognised teaching qualification although others are available.
What surprised me about my career so far
Availability of maths teaching jobs abroad and in UK.
How opportunities just sometimes arise by being in the right place at the right time.

At the moment I'd like to be the best maths teacher I can be
My advice to students considering work
Get a variety of experiences during the student days. A variety of part time / short term jobs is the best way to practice the soft skills of team work, communication, building relationships, and the diligence required for full time work. In term time and holidays I cleaned toilets, washed pots, delivered packages, handed out flyers, organised recruitment events, and led workshops for young people. Doing this helped me know what I do and don't enjoy.
My advice about working in my industry
Get the best degree you can; there are currently better financial rewards for higher degree classes. Get real experience in schools; it's becoming more of a formal requirement than just a good idea. Research and apply for the different teacher training routes; you'll maximise your chances of success and finding the right thing.

The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes, not just delivering the lessons in the classroom.
