A day in the life of a Executive and Leadership Development Coach in Luxembourg

Unlocking possibilities...

How I looked for work

Networking. It is not what you know...

My career goals when I graduated

I wanted to accelerate my career.

My career history

Social security - from benefit payments in local office to policy development in HQ. Then in legal aid administration which included auditing solicitors, developing the quality standard, director of equality and diversity and developing a pilot public defender service in the UK (2001)

What has helped my career to progress

Being prepared to put the effort in to create new thoughts and habits.

Courses taken since graduation

PCC - professional certified coach
Certified PCM coach (Process Communication Model)
Leadership training and mentorship in the John Maxwell Team (ongoing)

How my studies have helped my career

I graduated at the age of 39 and 2 years later I had taken early severance and moved into a role 3 levels up. Only because I took the risk of leaving the secure public sector at an age people told me I was too old.

What surprised me about my career so far

I feel I am doing everything backwards. Having the time of my life at 59 and not 29!

Where I hope to be in 5 years

My business will be more established in Europe and not only the UK and Luxembourg.

My advice to students considering work

Understand your strengths and what makes you you. Knowing your personality and the environment you thrive in plus how you can communicate with people are keys to success.

My advice about working in my industry

The advantage of the public sector is the variety of skills you learn along the way. The advantage of working for yourself is flexibility and learning even more skills!

Other advice

Always have a coach or a mentor throughout life. You stay focused and move forward more quickly.

Contacting me

What I do

Skills I use and how I developed them

Communication, coaching, leadership, organisational - developed over 30 years as a UK civil servant and 7 years with my own business

What I like most

Seeing people become the best version of themselves and play to their strengths.

What I like least

Having to do everything myself - however, I have learned how to build websites, social media and accounting as well as my core skills

What surprised me most

How long it took to be accepted and established in a foreign country when you are not an employee
