My advice to students considering work
Get plenty of relevant work experience, but also enjoy university as much as you can before leaving. Take advantage of any opportunities offered!
My advice about working in my industry
If you are interested in the Bar, mini-pupillages are a must. Try to experience as many different areas of law as you can.
Be prepared for plenty of competition over pupillages. Start thinking about what might help you to stand out from the crowd...
However, if you can secure pupillage, it is still a wonderful job despite the horror stories.

What I do
I am a pupil barrister at a common law set in London. I mainly work in criminal law.
How I started my business
After leaving York I studied the BPTC in London. I then worked for a year editing an authoritative criminal legal text before securing pupillage in summer 2015.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Oral and written advocacy - developed through courses and experience.
Analysis and legal research - developed through my degree and a previous stint as a legal editor.
Self-discipline - time in the Army Reserve has helped!
What I like most
Being my own boss; unusual working hours.
What I like least
Filling out tax returns as someone who is self-employed; unpredictable caseloads.
