A day in the life of a HR - Business Excellence Specialist in the United Kingdom

Improving processes and systems in HR role

How I looked for work

I got into this role by first applying and getting onto the work experience HR placement 2 days after I graduated in July 2015, but the search for employment after uni was really tough.
I was constantly searching for something that might interest me on graduate and career websites between the start of second year and the end of final year. I found the best way to get category-specific graduate roles was to look at the individual employer's websites.
I found job searching particularly difficult, as I wasn't sure on what I really wanted to do after university (job-wise), and quite a few graduate schemes asked for degrees that were directly linked to the job role in question.

The recruitment process

The recruitment process for the HR placement 8 week programme was really relaxed and fun. It was a two-part interview which included a one-to-one interview and a team-building exercise. The staff were really friendly and keen to learn about the interests of the group before the interviews began.

My career goals when I graduated

I was adamant before leaving uni that I wanted to get on a graduate scheme and this would be the be-all and end-all of life post-graduation. The truth is that this is not the case, and most of the time it is actually better to get into a company through a more conventional route and then prove and develop your skills that way.

My career history

I have worked constantly throughout university in retail at York Designer Outlet, from 8-16 hrs a week, and more during holiday periods.

What has helped my career to progress

I am just at the start of my career, but I can see myself easily developing and moving into more challenging roles in the future - the future looks positive!

How my studies have helped my career

My degree has helped give me a good communications grounding and I plan on using what I have learnt a lot more in my future at Nestle.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

In 5 years I hope to progress to a more project-based role as I feel this is what suits me best. This could be in HR or another department, as it seems really easy to move roles if you find a more suitable one at Nestle. I do plan on moving to Australia in 5-10 years time if I have the chance, and I know there are opportunities with Nestle there! Fingers-crossed!

My advice to students considering work

Don't get too caught up with graduate schemes - most of the time they seem far too based on tests that either don't show off someone's full potential in a role, or focus too much on the people who get 100% in the tests (and some people have told me that they cheated these tests anyway so I am quite against them).

My advice about working in my industry

HR is constantly changing and can get quite fast paced! If you want a really good way to start your career from many degree backgrounds then this could be it.

Contacting me

If you would like to ask me any further questions to do with my degree or what I am currently working on, or maybe even how I answered my interview questions, then don't hesitate to contact me!

What I do

I work as a 'Business Excellence Specialist' in HR at Nestle in York.

This role is based around projects and improving the processes and systems in HR; I am also currently helping to manage the fleet of cars at Nestle.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I use many skills in this role, including critical thinking, team-building, managing relationships, networking, time management, negotiation, advocating, authority, decision-making, challenging, planning and self-reflection, which I have been constantly developing since I started my degree in 2012.

What I like most

I love the people I work with and constantly developing myself, both as a person and professionally.

What I like least

I am the type of person who sometimes find the process work in this type of roll a bit repetitive, but I am always first in line when a new task or project comes up!

What surprised me most

I am surprised how easily I fitted in and how much people are happy to give me more responsibilities if I push myself.
