Improving processes and systems in HR role
My career goals when I graduated
I was adamant before leaving uni that I wanted to get on a graduate scheme and this would be the be-all and end-all of life post-graduation. The truth is that this is not the case, and most of the time it is actually better to get into a company through a more conventional route and then prove and develop your skills that way.
My career history
I have worked constantly throughout university in retail at York Designer Outlet, from 8-16 hrs a week, and more during holiday periods.
What has helped my career to progress
I am just at the start of my career, but I can see myself easily developing and moving into more challenging roles in the future - the future looks positive!
How my studies have helped my career
My degree has helped give me a good communications grounding and I plan on using what I have learnt a lot more in my future at Nestle.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
In 5 years I hope to progress to a more project-based role as I feel this is what suits me best. This could be in HR or another department, as it seems really easy to move roles if you find a more suitable one at Nestle. I do plan on moving to Australia in 5-10 years time if I have the chance, and I know there are opportunities with Nestle there! Fingers-crossed!
My advice to students considering work
Don't get too caught up with graduate schemes - most of the time they seem far too based on tests that either don't show off someone's full potential in a role, or focus too much on the people who get 100% in the tests (and some people have told me that they cheated these tests anyway so I am quite against them).
My advice about working in my industry
HR is constantly changing and can get quite fast paced! If you want a really good way to start your career from many degree backgrounds then this could be it.

What I do
I work as a 'Business Excellence Specialist' in HR at Nestle in York.
This role is based around projects and improving the processes and systems in HR; I am also currently helping to manage the fleet of cars at Nestle.
Skills I use and how I developed them
I use many skills in this role, including critical thinking, team-building, managing relationships, networking, time management, negotiation, advocating, authority, decision-making, challenging, planning and self-reflection, which I have been constantly developing since I started my degree in 2012.
What I like most
I love the people I work with and constantly developing myself, both as a person and professionally.
What I like least
I am the type of person who sometimes find the process work in this type of roll a bit repetitive, but I am always first in line when a new task or project comes up!
What surprised me most
I am surprised how easily I fitted in and how much people are happy to give me more responsibilities if I push myself.
