Career options in research can be limited without a PhD

Why I continued studying

During my year in industry I saw that career options in research can be limited without a PhD

What my course is like

I undertook a doctoral training programme PhD so I spent the first year in lectures and workshops learning about new concepts that would be useful for my research. I had a chemistry background so I choose courses in Biology. At the end of my second year I picked a PhD project and spent the following 3 years performing my own independent research project.

How I have funded my studies

The programme was fully funded.

What I like most

I had the opportunity to really direct what I was doing on a day to day basis and was very independant.

What I like least

Also the independence - sometimes I felt very alone and unsure of what to do.

What surprised me most

How much I had learnt and achieved at the end of it. Also that PhD bursaries aren't that bad and they are tax free - so can be comparable to a starting salary in a graduate job.

My advice to students considering further study

Think carefully about the area you want to work in, and who you work for. PhD supervisors are all very different - they can be as important as the topic you pick!
