A day in the life of a Scientific Officer in the United Kingdom

I am directly and specifically using the skills and knowledge that I have acquired completing my degrees

How I found out about the job

I was offered this position on the back of my MSc research project

What I do

I work in the malaria research lab where I carried out my MSc project. Personally, much of what I do is 'wet' work at the bench, but working as part of a large reserach group means I am often contributing in a variety of different ways to our outputs and projects.

Skills I use and how I developed them

General and specific lab skills, data analysis and scientific writing skills, all of which I mainly developed during my BSc and MSc. It also requires good organisational and teamworking skills to be able to coordinate multiple projects and collaborations with collegues.

What I like most

I am directly and specifically using the skills and knowledge that I have acquired completing my degrees. Although there can be a lot of responsibility to take on and at times the workload can be heavy, it's a fun, interesting and relaxed working environment.

What I like least

You sometimes have to fit your life around work - in biological research, some things just can't wait. But any late nights or awkward hours can be made up for with the ability to be flexible at other times.
