A day in the life of a Product Manager in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

A former colleague made the move to Google and referred me to the manager of his team.

How I found out about the job

Personal contacts

The recruitment process

Applied in December 2009 by sending my CV to my friend who was a Google employee.
1) General introduction call with a Google recruiter.
2) Phone interview with manager of prospective team
3) Full day (5 interviews) of on-site interviews.

What I do

I am a product manager within the Google Nexus team. I define the roadmap of features for the Nexus handsets, specifically those relating to cellular connectivity. I spend my days meeting carriers, writing specs and watching the engineers make it a reality.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Requirements analysis and specification. Lots of practice in my previous job and writing technical documentation at University!

What I like most

Working at the bleeding edge of technical innovation.

What I like least

Late night calls with Google HQ in Silicon Valley!

What surprised me most

How Google still maintains its start-up culture despite its ever-growing size.
