How I found out about the job

The process involved an informal interview with a Senior Manager followed by a formal interview with another Senior Manager and Partner. The formal interview included preparing a presentation ahead of the interview as well as an unseen presentation to be done on the day.

My career

My career goals when I graduated

To join a graduate management programme in the public sector or in the energy or manufacturing industries.

My career history

I joined the NHS Graduate Management Scheme in 2007. On completing the scheme I worked in the NHS for a further 6 years in a range of operational management roles reaching General Manager level. I joined EY in 2015 to broaden my experience and try a different type of role whilst maintaining my link to health services.

Courses taken since graduation

MSc Health and Public Leadership - University of Birmingham
Advanced LEAN Practitioner

My advice to students

My advice to students considering work

Applying for your first substantive role after graduating can be tough. Expect many of your applications to be rejected or ignored but stay positive and be tenacious when applying for roles. Everyone gets there eventually.

My advice about working in my industry

The health service provides a fantastic intellectual challenge and allows the opportunity to make a real positive difference to people's lives. It can also be incredibly challenging so you have to be passionate about improving services for patients in order to enjoy and excel in this industry.

Contacting me

I am very happy to be contacted by anyone interested in or starting a career in healthcare management or anyone considering applying to the NHS management training scheme. I would be happy to answer general questions or explore a mentoring relationship.

I would also be happy to discuss management consultancy skills.
