A day in the life of a Chemistry Operations Director in the United Kingdom
What I do
Lead a group of chemists at a contract testing organisation. We specilaise in testing materials for the pharmaceutical as well as the consumer markets (e.g. food contact).
Skills I use and how I developed them
I use a whole raft of skills, much more now away from the lab bench than in front of it. I see technical aspects around equipment, I deal with finance, quality and HR. I work with accounts to make sure my group is profitable.
What I like most
Interacting with staff and seeing them develop.
My career history
Started at a contract research organisation, moved to big Pharma and moved back to contract research organisation.
What has helped my career to progress
Taking an opportunity that has come along and making the most of it
My advice to students considering work
Try and get as much experience as possible - which is easy saying but can be difficult to achieve.
