How I found out about the job

The recruitment process

International education relies of interviews in central locations, mainly London if you are UK based. This process is very different to the UK schools process. Applications are much earlier than in the UK. Most international schools have a resignation deadline before early January, so adverts start to appear early December onwards. The paper work for an international move can take a considerable amount of time to complete couriering documents between yourself and the school.

My career goals when I graduated

School management within 5 years.

My career history

Teacher of Maths and ICT. GNCQ Co-ordinator, Climbing Wall Manager, Key Skills Co-ordinator, Tecaher of ICT, Head of ICT, Teacher of Maths, Assistant Head of Maths.

What has helped my career to progress

Flexibility, adapt to situations as new challenges arise.

Courses taken since graduation

TTAIT - Teaching ICT in Teacher Training
MLC, SPA, Kayak Instructor.
Various professional courses.

How my studies have helped my career

My PGCE prepared me for the classroom but other training has helped to develop this and extend it to the skills needed for other roles.

What surprised me about my career so far

That experience can be gained but putting yourself forward opens doors in a more interesting way.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Options change all the time and goals change with them.

My advice to students considering work

Teaching is great, its hard work but wonderful. Get involved and find out what it is like before you qualify. Volunteer and get experience.

My advice about working in my industry

Prepare your subject knowledge, you would be amazed what you have forgotten. Research schools before you apply, make sure you know what they are like, their OFSTED reports and the back-ground on the area. Go in open eyed but keen.
