A day in the life of a Actuarial Non-Life Advisor in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

The Directory of Actuarial Employers on the The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries website is a great starting point.

How I found out about the job

LinkedIn

The recruitment process

I had two interviews - one with the Chief Actuary and one with the CFO and Underwriting Director.

My career history

After graduation I spent 3 and a half years as an Actuarial Trainee at Mercer in Leeds before moving industries into general insurance. I spent 2 years at a specialist insurer in Leeds before moving to London to join KPMG. After 14 months I left KPMG to move back "in-house" to the Shipowners' Club.

What has helped my career to progress

Hard work, strong communication skills and enthusiasm

Courses taken since graduation

Fellowship of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries

How my studies have helped my career

My job as an actuary involves a reasonable amount of mathematics and statistics so my degree has been very useful.

My advice to students considering work

Do lots of research, try and get a summer placement and focus on an industry or profession you're interested in.

Other advice

Data science is the future (not just in insurance) - learn R, Python, SQL.

What I do

I am an Actuary at The Shipowners' Club, a mutual marine liability insurer in London. I am also a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. My role involves supporting the Chief Actuary on all manner of actuarial matters - including pricing, reserving and capital management.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Mathematics, IT, financial modelling and communication are all key to my role. These have been developed through learning on the job as well as the professional exams I have sat.

What I like most

Finding solutions to difficult problems by analysing data

What I like least

Data issues
