A day in the life of a Senior Clinical Psychologist in Saudi Arabia
What I do
After I graduated, I returned back to my country, Saudi Arabia, to work at King Fahad Medical City. I got my position there as a senior clinical psychologist. I'm running two clinics, one of them is called Women's Health Psychology and the other one is for Behaviour Psychology. The latter is aimed at couples with infertility problems. The first is for dealing with psychological problem women suffer from. Both clinics are interested in seeing both couples - to be psychologically assessed and then applying the psychological intervention such as CBT, BT, and IPT. In addition to covering the spinal cord injury at the Rehab Hospital. This is in addition to being responsible for continuing education for the department of mental health that consists of Psychiatry and Psychology. I have worked part time in the past giving a psychology course to the 3rd year medical students. I enjoyed it a lot in addition to running stress management workshops for employees.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Of course getting my PhD from a prestigious, high profile university such as York gave me credit even before I started my job. As for the subject, it was a subject of great interest to me. I believe studying something I love motivates me to persue it even after graduation and this has helped in spreading awareness of the importance of such knowledge in relationships between couples and marriage satisfaction.
What I like most
I enjoy that it is related to my interest in dealing with psychological problems of couples and using psychological interventions to improve their well-being. The experience I am gaining will help me gain further opportunities in the future.
What I like least
Sometimes there are misunderstandings about the difference between professional psychological intervention and psychological support as well as confusion sometimes between clinical and counselling psychology.
My career history
I'm working at King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh the capital city of Saudi Arabia. This hospital is under the umbrella of the Ministry of Health. It consists of 4 hospitals - main, women, children and rehab, in addition to diabetic, cardiology and oncology centers. I have been working there since 2005. I went to get my PhD and returned back to the same hospital.
Courses taken since graduation
Stress management, Gottman level 1 training. Stanford Benit IQ and some other more
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to reach a position of decision making and leadership in the future.
My advice to students considering work
Look at what job do you want to do after graduation and try to get more practical training and certificates in these requirements. It is not only the the degree that is important, but also having the practical skills you need to make you unique from others.
My advice about working in my industry
Qualification is the first step, but more of clinical training, and interest in research that is linked to developing the service provided.
