A day in the life of a Assistant Professor in the United States
What I do
I teach courses and do research in French history at a higher education institution in the US. When at university, I prepare lectures, teach classes, hold office hours, and advise students on their work and careers. For the research part of my work, I often travel to France to work in the national archives there. A lot of the rest of my time is spent writing, editing, and reading.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Having a PhD from York certainly helped, but just as valuable was the individual care and advice I received from my supervisor and other members of the History Department at York. My supervisor prepared me for the realities of an academic career and gave me good advise on how to choose between different job offers and plan for a good future.
Degree skills:
Teaching experience through working as a graduate tutor at York was crucial, as was taking part in conferences and helping to organise academic events.
What I like most
My job allows me to teach what I am most interested in (the history of the French Revolution and eighteenth-century history more generally) and gives me sufficient time to conduct research, as well. I like working with students and having a good balance between teaching other social aspects of my job and research/writing. I also really like my colleagues and department.
