A day in the life of a Teacher of Sociology in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

TES

Courses taken since graduation

PGCE, PGDip

Where I hope to be in 5 years

There are a lot of opportunities to take on additional, paid, roles. I was made an examinations officer within three months of starting my current position. Senior management positions would be within reach after a few years in the school.

My advice to students considering work

Start early and make maximum use of the Careers Service!

My advice about working in my industry

Apply early and do your research!

What I do

I teach A Level Sociology at an independent school in Hertfordshire. I am also a house tutor and take responsibility for the welfare and progression of seven A level students by assisting them with careers and university applications, for example.

Skills I use and how I developed them

My subject knowledge and the level of my degree were determining factors in my being offered my current position.

Extracurricular skills:
The organisational and negotiation skills developed through participation in clubs and societies.

What I like most

I enjoy the 'light-bulb' moment when your students grasp difficult concepts.

What I like least

It's unheard of to work Saturdays...

What would I change? I would like to spend more time on teaching, less time on paperwork...
