A day in the life of a Regional Fundraiser in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Charity Jobs

My career history

Since graduating from the University of York I have worked in a number of different sectors. When I completed my MSc in 2008 I joined an internship with the Stockholm Environment Institute, this involved working in Tanzania for 6 weeks and completing a research project. It was a fantastic experience and evaluated the water resources available to the local community. I then took a role at the Department of Health which enabled me to learn about the policy process and how Government organisations work together with other companies to implement research and policy. Although I enjoyed this role I decided to start fundraising for the United Nations anti malaria campaign in my spare time. Currently I am working as a Regional Fundraiser for Sue Ryder and am responsible for expanding our fundraising activities and volunteer networks in the York area. Here at Sue Ryder we provide care for people with incurable illnesses.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

My ambitions for the future are to continue learning and building on my fundraising experience and skills. I would like to work on more international projects, specifically raising funds to help people in Africa and other developing countries. It would be brilliant if one day I could combine my past knowledge of our precious environment with fundraising. Perhaps a job at WaterAid! I would also be interested to work more in visual communciations and presenting promotional videos.

My advice to students considering work

My top tips would be start to build your personal networks while you are at University. If you are interested in working for a particular company seek them out and introduce yourself and find out more about their work. Also get involved in societies at the University that will help you to give examples of skills such as teamwork and communication. Employers now recruit by looking online so start to build your online profile - look up "Linkedin".

What I do

Develop and deliver a robust and innovative regional fundraising action plan for North Yorkshire, covering the areas of York, Whitby & Scarborough, in line with the national Sue Ryder strategy; recruit new supporters and develop existing relationships to build key fundraising support groups in the local community; develop a network of volunteers to assist with the local and regional fundraising events; increase awareness of Sue Ryder's work through various media communication channel's, including press releases, video, radio and social media; Maximise opportunities to raise funds and ensure long term sustainable income for Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice and Holme Hall; responsible for working with Healthcare teams to develop local case studies and care stories.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Degree skills:
The MSc in Environmental Science and Management particularly helped me to develop my communication and presentation skills. In my current role I spend time giving talks and presentations to community groups including schools as well as attending networking events.

What I like most

I love meeting new people, attending large scale national events like the London Marathon and talking to our supporters about how we have helped them and their families. I also enjoy working with the local media to promote our work in the local community.

What I like least

My least favourite thing is catching up on all the admin work.

What would I change? I would like to be involved in more international fundraising and projects.
