A day in the life of a Forecasting Analyst in the United Kingdom
My career history
I started on a temporary year long contract as cover for a team member on secondment. Since then I've become a permanent member of the team and had a promotion into a more senior analyst role.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I am hoping to move up through the department I am in until I feel I have gotten all I can from it. After that I hope to move to other areas of the company where I feel I can increase my skill set and can make the role my own.
My advice to students considering work
Make sure your CV is quick and easy to read - as well as unique. It is important to include appropriate skills rather then all the skills you have, tailor the CV for the job that is being applied for.
My advice about working in my industry
When I first started in my role, I wasn't expected to know anything about the industry. This meant showing an interest in the industry and researching it ahead of the interview made me stand out
What I do
My current job is to predict gas demand for E.on's customers so that it can be bought and sent round the country. This involves a short term forecast that is produced everyday and a long term forecast that is produced every two months. As well as actively producing or assisting with these forecasts, I help maintain the systems and models, test and develop new tools, analyse data and report on performance. These tasks are done in a variety of ways, and are not limited to standard regular tasks. The regular tasks are broken up with a variety of challenging activities that are flexible and dependent on what has been happening.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Having studied Maths, I found my degree could be applied to many roles as number skills are very versatile. It also helped that I had a dissertation that was eye catching and unique - as well as interesting without requiring a specific interest.
What I like most
I like how much I can learn from my role. I have increased my IT skills since I joined the company as well as learnt a lot about the energy industry. E.on also encourages personal development as well as job specific development, which has allowed me to improve my presentation skills.
