A day in the life of a Consultant in the United Kingdom
My career history
I joined the BT Professional Services graduate programme in September 2008. I was based in London, although travel was involved in my work as I was working in Global Services. Following the graduate programme I joined the consulting community in BT and worked as a Transformation Consultant on large IT programmes.
In February 2011, I joined Deloitte in their People and Programmes consulting team. This is based in London although I could be sent anywhere in the world (depending on client needs.)

Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to get promoted around every one and a half to two years for as long as I stay in consulting.
My advice to students considering work
Do lots of work experience during your summer breaks. Ask lots of questions and don't jump at the first job you are offered.
What I do
I work as a consultant for Deloitte. My role involves working in the People and Programmes team. I help clients overcome challenges with leadership, organisation design, talent management and change management. As a consultant, I am employed full time by Deloitte, but resourced flexibly on projects. This means the work is really varied; I'm always working on different projects and with a variety of different clients from different organisations and sectors.
Skills I use and how I developed them
I had experience of dealing with senior stakeholders, as well as good communication and people skills, project management skills, and strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Degree skills:
During my undergraduate course I was encouraged to challenge others, and learnt to present with confidence and express my views.
Extracurricular skills:
I developed project management skills (through doing the PRINCE 2 qualification), and business acumen (through work experience).
What I like most
I like the variety - no two days are the same. I'm constantly given new challenges and thrown out of my comfort zone. I enjoy working with really intellegent and inspiring people.
What I like least
The aspects I like least are the uncertainty of where in the world I'm going to be with work, and working really long hours when deadlines are approaching.
