A day in the life of a Broadcast Engineer in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

From my last year of uni until I got my job, I was regularly checking media job listings, while doing other work to fill the gap.

How I found out about the job

_other

The recruitment process

When I saw the advert for this job, I emailed my CV and was asked in for an interview.

My career history

I started off as a broadcast engineer for North Wales, and after three years I applied for a role that appeared in London in our company.

What has helped my career to progress

Being inquisitive and actively willing to lend a hand and learn new things.

My advice about working in my industry

Be friendly. Radio's quite a small industry and everyone knows everyone.

What I do

I'm based in our Leicester Square broadcast centre as part of a team covering all of Global's radio and TV brands including: Classic FM, Capital, Heart, Smooth, LBC, Radio X, and Gold.
As part of the broadcast engineering team, we:
Have around 45 studios which we plan, install and maintain.
Support and train users on radio and TV broadcast tech in person and on call 24/7/365.
Regularly plan and do outside broadcasts both in the UK and abroad.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Being involved with University Radio York and York Student Television, both of which gave me a great insight to the media industry, and use more knowledge from there day-to-day than from my course.
The most valuable being teamwork / communicating with people from different backgrounds, and the experience of having to fix something urgently, creatively and on a budget.

What I like most

It's fun and exciting: there's something new every day. Everyone in radio is passionate about what they do.

What I like least

I work shifts, and although I prefer the variation that gives me in what I do day-to-day, my life outside of work kind of has to be scheduled around it.

What surprised me most

How friendly everyone is
