A day in the life of a Managing Partner in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Started the business with 2 partners.

My career history

I trained as a chartered accountant following graduation before moving into corporate finance with a large accountancy practice. Joined a mid-market private equity firm in 1998, first in London and then seconded to establish a German office. I moved to Canada in 2003 to join Royal Bank of Canada in mezzanine debt team. I returned to the UK in 2006 to found Key Capital Partners in 2006.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to build KCP into a respected PE House with a top quartile investment record.

My advice to students considering work

Follow your interests - don't be too hung up on a "long term plan", try to build up networks, be prepared to take "risky" opportunities if you are passionate about them.

What I do

Most of my day is spent evaluating potential investment opportunites, researching markets and modelling potential transaction structures. I also have a role in guiding the development of companies we have backed as a non executive director.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Being a Chartered Accountant. Investment track record.

Degree skills:
My course helped me to develop skills in micro-economic analysis and investment appraisal.

Extracurricular skills:
Evaluating people - learned through experience and seeing how situations pan out. Sales and presentationl skills - years of trying and failing!

What I like most

I enjoy the variety, intellectual challenge, living off my wits and having to back my own judgement.

What I like least

I don't enjoy sleepless nights if there are problems with an investment, paperwork, bureaucratic regulation.
