My career history
I worked in a finance department of a local council when I first graduated and then got a job working for the energy saving trust advice line.
Courses taken since graduation
Have completed various types of training through work
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to progress up the ladder into management and undertake as much training as possible.
My advice to students considering work
I would definitely advise volunteering whilst applying for jobs to help get contacts and experience. Ring companies and speak to people rather than sending emails because most people are probably going to be too busy to read and then reply! Also try to complete your dissertation with a company.
Also don't get too hung up on only applying for the 'dream' job it's surprising the opportunity other jobs can give you.

What I do
I work in contaminated land and the work is very varied. I carry out desk based research and analysis for the potential contamination at sites, carry out field work at the sites to investigate any identified sources and then analysis of the information from the site works. Each site varies a lot with the types of current and historical contamination, and the potential pathways in which the contamination can travel and potential ways to treat any issues identified.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
Report writing is a vital part of my role but these are very different to the ones I undertook at university. I also need to use problem solving skills and be very organised and practical. Site work involves the need to preplan and multitask. Experience has developed all these skills.
What I like most
The variety in work and the amount of problem solving involved.
What I like least
The pay in the contaminated land sector isn't fantastic and sometimes it feels a bit like financial incentives are more important than environmental but I do work for the private sector!
