My career history
Demonstrator (during PhD)
Graduate research assistant (during final stages of PhD)
Post-doctoral Research Assistant (immediately following PhD hand-in).

Where I hope to be in 5 years
- Collaborative research across several countries to give a general picture
- Continued research output and recognition of this by promotion to senior lecturer
- Development of teaching skills.
My advice to students considering work
My advice is that you should have clear, practical examples you can draw on to evidence teamwork, independence, project management and other transferable skills.
It's a really rewarding career, but very difficult to switch off from - if you want a 9-5 job then this isn't the one for you!

What I do
My role involves:
Programme administration (I run the Applied Geography degree)
Developing and delivering teaching materials (I lead two units but contribute to six others at varying levels)
Assessment (setting and marking)
Primary research
Consultancy/other enterprise activities.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Extracurricular skills:
People management - this has been a steep learning curve during this job!
Research - developed during BSc-PhD and Postdoc - this is always developing
Teaching - began during demonstration work but really developed since joining BU
Time management - I'm still learning how to do this to avoid being overwhelmed by all the different tasks I need to complete.
What I like most
I enjoy making a difference to students and the fact that every day is different. I like the freedom to pursue research of interest to me (some of the time!).
What I like least
The admin load is quite high. Something always seems to crop up of immediate importance when I am settling down to write up research work.
