A day in the life of a Associate Professor in China

How I found out about the job

Employer's website

The recruitment process

After making an application on the Shanghai University website, I was invited to an assessment, which included a self-presentation about my research area and the reasons for my application. I also needed to give a trial lecture.

My career history

After I graduated from my PhD course in York in the end of 2005, I started to work in Shanghai University in May 2006.

My advice to students considering work

With more and more overseas returners, PhD students should strive to make their research published in order to pop out of the crowd. Moreover, they can also consider engaging in postdoctoral research.

What I do

As an associate professor, I have to prepare and give lectures; apply for research fund and provide support to students.

Skills I use and how I developed them

My PhD in electronics helped me to get a teaching role in this area.

What I like most

I am interested in my research area and I have substantial flexibility to manage my time and work.

What I like least

Sometimes I work under great pressure to manage a research team.
