A day in the life of a General Manager Assistant in China

How I found out about the job

Internal application

The recruitment process

When I finished my course in 2004, I worked in an investment management company. In 2010, there was a vacancy in its subsidiary, namely my current company, which I was really interested, so I made an internal application and had the interview with the management of my previous company.

My career history

I worked in an investment management company in Shanghai in August 2004. In April 2010, I was transferred to working as a General Manager Assistant in my current company.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to stay in my current role and contribute to expansion of my company, to make it national or even international!

My advice to students considering work

I believe York students, especially those from China, should strive to better their standard of English during their time in the UK, as an excellent command of English is usually highly regarded in corporate interviews.

What I do

As a General Manager Assistant, not only am I in charge of the general operation of my company, I also have to monitor the marketing, research and development departments.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Degree skills:
Owing to the cultural differences between Britain and China, the knowledge I learned from my course has not helped much in my career. However, what I value more from my course is the development of my learning and analytical skill, research skills and team-working skills, which I find really useful in my current and previous positions. Moreover, my better English gained from my overseas education also helped me to stand out from the crowd in interviews.

What I like most

Management of recyclable resources and waste is still a green area in China, and I am pleased to contribute in envrionmental protection by working in this sector.

What I like least

Sometimes the working hours are quite long, and I don't have many holidays so I cannot go travelling as frequently as I'd like.
