Where I hope to be in 5 years
Prospects are good. The company is expanding and with expansion come opportunities.
My advice to students considering work
Talk to as many people in as many different jobs as possible. You learn a lot and also gain contacts for possible employment. In the private sector contacts are very key to getting jobs.
What I do
I manage two people and have responsibility for running PR and public affairs accounts/project for various clients. I have to ensure tasks are done on time and we deliver against targets. I also have to pursue new business for the company.
Skills I use and how I developed them
18 years PR and public affairs experience.
Degree skills:
Ability to write and frame an argument is key and communicate in a group meeting is also key. Plus an understanding of UK politics helps!
Extracurricular skills:
Experience of lobbying and devising and running campaigns.
What I like most
It's varied and no one day is ever the same. I enjoy working with like minded people.
What I like least
Having to do timesheets (to record how much time I spent on any particular task / project)!
What would I change? I'd probably move around slightly less I guess.
