You can't plan for everything, you just have to gain as many skills as you can and use your initiative to apply your skill to the problems you face.

What I do

As a bioinformatics software developer I design and implement software pipelines, for the analysis of large datasets from biological experiments.

MRes Computational Biology.

Degree skills:
A background in biology enables me to help scientists solve their computational problems.

Extracurricular skills:
Communication and team work skills from playing in a number of sport teams has help in my work's team environment.
