A day in the life of a Research Associate in Health Economics in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Monthly e-mail of jobs sent around by Supervisor

Courses taken since graduation

MSc in Health Economics at the University of York 2007-2009

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I'm hoping to enter a PhD at Nottingham University.

My advice to students considering work

As soon as you finish your 2nd year/ start 3rd year, start applying for jobs. It takes a great weight off your mind once you know you have something to go to once you have finished university.

What I do

I work with clinicians who are looking for funding to undertake research. I give them methodological advice around Economic Evaluation and also advice around the various National Instsitute for Health Research (NIHR) funding streams, trying to find the most appropriate stream for their research.

Skills I use and how I developed them

MSc in Health Economics

Degree skills:
I have no problems with teaching and running workshops which I developed by presenting at seminars during undergraduate course.

What I like most

The teamwork, the opportunity to get hands-on in research design and networking, opening up opportunities to visit all parts of the region we cover and meet new people.

What I like least

What would I change? As mentioned, I'm currently looking for a PhD since my job has no promotion prospects (in terms of academia). I could have possibly entered a PhD after my masters.
