A day in the life of a Tutor in Taiwan

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I am a freelancer who keeps students on-task with proactive learning strategies. Currently, I am responsible for more than 25 students.

What do you do?

Evaluated and revised lesson plans and course content to facilitate and moderate classroom discussions and student-centered learning.
Enhanced student learning by optimizing a wide range of instructional approaches and innovative classroom activities.
Kept students on-task with proactive behavior modification and positive reinforcement strategies.
Maintaining discipline and creating a vibrant teaching atmosphere.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

After receiving intensive training from the postgraduate courses, I have sharpened my understanding of languages and business. Therefore, I would like to contribute to society by mentoring and coaching and nurturing the younger generation.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes, my current job is certainly different from international business. However, I can still use my expertise to carry out an outstanding teaching outcome in Taiwan.

Describe your most memorable day at work

I have successfully helped numerous pupils to pass the Cambridge Assessment English. In particular, one of my smartest students who is only 9 years old passed the B2 level the First Certificate in English (FCE). I also helped many other students to achieve their tasks. I received affirmative feedback which is a very rewarding experience.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Due to the fact that I teach more than 20 families at the same time, I find it challenging to get the right work-life balance.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Given that I charge slightly higher than the average tuition fee, my students are usually from rich families. My students usually study in expensive private schools. I can make friends from the upper classes. It is interesting to communicate with entrepreneurs from all walks of life.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I participated in polo and debating clubs. I am also an ambassador at the University of York. I believe that I become more sociable and outgoing. The reason is that I need to meet new people and introduce my campus to prospective students.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I am planning to pursue Ph.D. in the USA. I think I prefer teaching to business. Accordingly, I aim to receive further training in CELTA courses. Alternatively, I will pursue further studies in a teaching education program.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

* Research the institute you are applying to and tailor your CV.
* Apply widely and be prepared to learn new knowledge when working in the new workplace.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

How to overcome culture shock when studying in a foreign country.
How to improve your scores when your grade wasn't ideal in the first term.
How to prepare IELTS test.
