A day in the life of a Engineer - Compilation Tools in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Already worked there

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Competition is tough, but I hope to progress in my current role and take a more senior engineering role. There is always the option of management, too.

My advice to students considering work

Figure out what is important to you? Lots of money, or enjoyable days? At university, I would always have answered "money" -- but when you realise you have to spend 8 HOURS every day at work, you shift your priorities. That said, your 20s, after graduation, are the right time to throw yourself into your career and give it EVERYTHING. Make the most of it.

What I do

I am responsible for developing features (and fixing bugs) in ARM's RVCT (compiler and build tools) product. I spend most of my days designing solutions then implementing them (in English - I scribble on paper then I code).
There are also progress meetings, planning meetings etc, but these are kept to a minimum here (who likes meetings??).

Skills I use and how I developed them

One and half years of experience working with ARM technology (first job after graduation was at ARM).

Degree skills:
The material covered in computer architecture classes was not the most exciting, but definitely the most useful. I have used that knowledge repeatedly since I graduated. I wouldn't have the job at all if I hadn't done the Year in Industry.

What I like most

I love working on new technology - being the first (well, one of the first) to know about so many exciting things. Mostly I just love being paid to solve puzzles. Every day is a challenge.

What I like least

I don't like when I have to write long reports about what I'm doing.

What would I change? I wouldn't change anything.
