A day in the life of a MYP Science Teacher in Spain
I thought that I had the perfect profile for a more technical career but, once I started as a teacher I discovered my ideal job.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
SEK Education Group encompasses an educational community that fosters the development of skills that guarantee relevant, global, international and meaningful learning. The goal of this learning is to attain the full, all-round realisation of each of our students’ potential to tackle the challenges set by the 21st century..
What do you do?
I am in charge of teaching Sciences subjects for middle and secondary school students.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
One of my goals is to encourage my students to be open-minded and risk takers, and I can explain them how wonderful my experience of studying at UoY was.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes, I thought that I had the perfect profile for a more technical career but, once I started as a teacher I discovered my ideal job.
Describe your most memorable day at work
I have many wonderful memories from my time there. If I have to choose one, that would be my graduation day because I was surrounded by all my family in my incredible university.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Many, I work with teenagers so everyday is a challenge. The necessity of motivating them and teaching them Physics in a way that they find it useful it is the most difficult task I encounter on a daily basis.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
I work in an International School in the south of Spain. It forms part of an education group that has schools in 5 countries between Europe and Asia. The environment is really good and the people I work with are wonderful. Our main goal is to help students to become global citizens through meaningful experiences inside and outside the class.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I formed part of the Women Engineering Society and, every year, I try to engage girls with STEM careers.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Before Covid-19, I asked to be transferred to the SEK School based in Qatar. Once everything improves, I will ask it again because I am really looking forward to experience this opportunity.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
I encourage them to get involved in everything that the university offers. As an international students, I should have taken the C1/C2 level of English qualifications while I was living there.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Anything that might help them.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
Being able to study at the UoY was one of the best experiences of my life.
