A day in the life of a Paralegal in the United Kingdom

Learning how the corporate world works was a big change of pace form studying at university.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Clarion Solicitors is a full service law firm providing legal work for all areas of law.

What do you do?

Currently a paralegal in the costs and litigation funding team. I prepare bill of costs for clients and provide legal advice regarding reassessments/appeals.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I wanted to use the skills learnt from studying Philosophy. This included high level analytical skills, critical thinking and effective problem solving.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

No, I had me eye on the law sector form my 2nd year at University.

Describe your most memorable day at work

My first day! Learning how the corporate world works was a big change of pace form studying at university.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Plenty, there can be a lot going on at once so staying organised is key, and learning to work effectively within a team can be daunting at first.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Clarion is an amazing environment that certainly promotes wellbeing and connectedness. There are always events/social to get involved with that helps break up the work.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I did both trampolining and climbing, which definitely helped with becoming resilient and persevering when things get tough.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Considering qualifying to become a solicitor.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Remember that resilience is key and it’s a test of longevity. A job will always present itself if you have the patience.
