A day in the life of a Timetabling Assistant in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Personal contacts

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to progress within the Campus Services and other support roles, with a higher position within the next year and continued promotion in the future.

My advice to students considering work

First - apply early - it's better to leave with an average job than none at all - and you can keep applying for more jobs as you're earning money! Be prepared to be knocked back several times - don't give up because someone great will employ you.

What I do

I am responsible for allocating rooms and spaces across the University campus to academic and extra-curricular activities, as well as meetings and other events in the day-to-day running of the University. I help to prepare the timetable - a job that requires collecting data about 30,000 activities across campus and finding them a time and space!

Skills I use and how I developed them

Knowledge of the University and the HE sector.

Extracurricular skills:
As a sabbatical officer for YUSU, I learnt how to deal with the HE sector's many stakeholders and how all parts of universities work together to deliver the student experience.

What I like most

The challenges that constantly have me thinking and using my brain to come up with solutions - ultimately leading to happy customers!

What I like least

Sometimes other areas of the University might make a decision we don't agree with - but we still need to implement it and get it right!

What would I change? I would have returned to the HE sector sooner, as it's an environment I really enjoy working in.
