A day in the life of a Advocacy Officer in the United Kingdom

I realised that I could be involved in changing policy and having a real impact on people’s lives through working in the 3rd sector.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

National leukaemia charity

What do you do?

I’m involved in patient advocacy (supporting patients on a range of issues they face), as well as campaigns, external policy (e.g. engaging with government and key stakeholders) and public affairs. I am also responsible for providing the patient voice in NICE health technology appraisals for new drugs.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I undertook volunteering experience as a policy and public affairs volunteer for a large children’s cancer charity for 4 months before starting my current role.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes! I didn’t know what I wanted to do and thought I might do a law conversion as I had legal work experience. I realised that I could be involved in changing policy and having a real impact on people’s lives through working in the 3rd sector.

Describe your most memorable day at work

-

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

-

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Life after graduation isn’t easy. But take time to reflect on what you want to achieve in a job and what your biggest motivators are. For me, I realised that making change and supporting those who are less fortunate than me was more important than a big salary.
