Sainsburys PLC

What do you do?

Manage a team of software developers, building data pipelines and a data governance platform to provide a single source of truth for supplier data

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Always interested in technology, progressed between consultancy, technical operations and finally into software development, and have since moved into management thereof.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Didn't have any specific expectations on industry, but always envisioned going into technology-based role.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Supported the technical side of an online sale event. Spent the day coordinating between various parts of the business to ensure the smooth performance of the website. Achieved the first ever zero-downtime sale.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Staying up to date with the wide variety of new technologies, and finding time to do everything I want to do.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Innovative and fun

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Caving taught me to lead a team and remain calm under pressure.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Due to be starting a new role at another company, leading a larger team. Eventually plan to start my own tech company.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Keep an open mind as to what roles are available, and don't be afraid to do something a little different.
