A day in the life of a Assistant Professor in Malaysia

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Department of Biotechnology, International Islamic University Malaysia

What do you do?

As an academic, I teach undergraduate students on subjects related to environmental biotechnology such as bioremediation, biodiversity, environmental laws and policy. I am also supervising research postgraduate students as well as conducting my own consultancy projects.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I guess it would be my passion in sharing my knowledge in experience both from research and academic perspective to future generations.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Different in terms of "the actual" deliverables that I need to deliver.

Describe your most memorable day at work

To be able to teach, guide and getting good feed backs from my students. And also to be able to receive research grants to conduct my own research activities.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

I would say, lab instruments since I am still consider my self as an early career researcher.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Progressive.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I was quite active managing my football team in York, as well as being the leader of my small Malaysian community during my study days. It does help me to improve my leadership skills.

What would you like to do next with your career?

To be able to transfer the research into products. And also to come back to York!

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

In this era, students have to diversify your way of showing off your talents to potential employers. Make use of your internet to show your talents, make the best out of your LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and many more!

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

How to finish your PhD within 4 years, with kids! and limited funding!

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

I am happy to guide or help if anyone need my help!
