FootAsylum are a high street retailer with a large engineering community helping develop their online and app presence

What do you do?

Principal software engineer working for their in-house iOS app - developing and mentoring the team.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Preference for software development during my Electronics degree, then experience developing apps for the BBC during their graduate scheme.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes - I took a music technology degree and thought I'd be working in a recording studio!

Describe your most memorable day at work

Winning a Halo tournament at the BBC

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Mostly trying to communicate technical details across different teams and disciplines

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Relaxed and supportive - no blame culture and continuous learning.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Mostly gaming, music and paintball so nothing really technical but I suppose it helped socially.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Move more in to mentoring junior members of the team.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Try and learn a variety of skills to show that you're able and eager to learn rather than worrying too much about mastering one particular thing.
