A day in the life of a VFX Line Producer in the United Kingdom

I wasn't really sure of what I wanted to be when I graduated. But I found that working in TV/Film VFX ticked all sorts of boxes.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

DNEG - a large VFX studio stationed out of Great Portland Street in London. We work on a variety of TV/Film projects, from Interstellar to Dark Crystal.

What do you do?

VFX Line Producer - responsible for scheduling and budgeting the VFX stages of various Hollywood films that my company undertakes

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Started work as a runner in films (teas/coffees/running around doing errands), worked my way into one of the big VFX Studios (MPC) and have been going since then.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I wasn't really sure of what I wanted to be when I graduated. But I found that working in TV/Film VFX ticked all sorts of boxes.

Describe your most memorable day at work

My job isn't really filled with memorable moments/days, but more characterised by repeated schedules: the steady calm of a dailies session, the convivial rounds with artists, the back-and-forth of colleague conversation. Don't join VFX if you're expecting a life-changing moment.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Most of my extracurricular activities were physical: karate, boxing, long-distance running. Very few of these developed transferable skills. But I made wonderful friends, and those went with me.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Whatever you do, make sure it gives you pride. Sometimes it's the only thing that keeps you going. Without it, your CV can turn into a long list of things you hate doing :P

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Any if not all. Hit me with your questions!
