A day in the life of a Management consultant in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work for Deloitte llp - one of the UKs largest professional services organisations

What do you do?

I'm a consultant in our Business Operations section of the Deloitte's Consultancy arm, focusing on Insurance and Banking

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

My first graduate job after graduation was as a Corporate Strategy Analyst with a FTSE 100 insurer. After a few years I was looking to grow my skills and experience further, and moved into consultacy

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes - like a lot of people in the sector I didn't have any childhood dreams of working in Financial Services, however my job search was never focused on a specific field, but instead I looked for jobs that would be intellectually stimulating, varied and with intelligent colleagues

Describe your most memorable day at work

One memorable day was the last day of a project which was the first one where I had been the lead consultant on site, leading a blended Deloitte and Client team working on a short but very intensive project - a Proof of Concept consisting of 3 "Sprints".
The project team had a final presentation for the project sponsor, and senior representatives from both the client and Deloitte were in the room and we were quite nervous ahead of time and tried to anticipate and prepare for any potential challenges and questions that could be asked.

Fortunately the presentation was a huge success, lead to very productive and constructive conversations for the client and the whole PoC was signed off as a big success.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Within consulting there may at times be a lot of travel and absence from the home. There is also an element of unpredictability and short notice, I've been called upon to travel to join a new project with less than 24 hrs notice. You are further expected to always "hit the ground running" even though you often work in fields that are completely new to yourself.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Club of PEP
Model UN

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Genuinely explore your interests and passions - being really good at something is the most useful skill
