A day in the life of a Student Recruitment, Admissions & Outreach Coordinator in the United Kingdom
In all honesty, when I graduated I had no idea what I wanted to do but I'm now working in a sector that I'm really passionate about.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for Hull York Medical School, and am based at the University of York.
What do you do?
My role is split between student recruitment and outreach/widening participation - I'm involved in planning and coordinating different events right from open days and offer holder visit days, to our Y12 summer residential, in-school talks and flagship outreach programmes with the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Sutton Trust.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I took a risk and moved abroad for a while, tried a few different jobs, and took the time to reflect on what I enjoyed and didn't enjoy, so that every move I made felt like it was getting me closer to what I actually wanted to do. I love doing something different each day, working with students and also having the freedom to develop activities/content.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Describe your most memorable day at work
Seeing students from some of our outreach programmes in their first week at the Medical School!
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was involved in the volunteering project Viva Voce and the Ballroom and Latin Society during my time in York - I also completed an LFA course with the Dept. of Language and Linguistic Science.
These were all great for improving my communication and presenting skills - plus I love dancing!
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
- It's ok not to know exactly what you want to do after graduating
- Not having a "graduate job" straight away does not mean that you're failing (even if it seems as though everyone else has got it figured out)
- Any job you do doesn't have to define your future career (people change sectors and roles all the time)
- Finding a job that you don't like can be just as valuable an experience as finding a job that you do like - just make sure that you don't spend more time than you absolutely need to doing something that you hate!
- Make the most of opportunities - you can learn a lot from trying new things
- Talk to people! Ask questions!
