A day in the life of a Assistant Editor in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

National press

Courses taken since graduation

NCTJ (Certificate in Journalism)

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I am lucky enough to be working for one of the biggest companies in my chosen field, so I hope there will be a wide range of opportunities for progression and also travel.

My advice to students considering work

Start looking into your options in your second year (or ideally first year) - if you leave it to your third year you generally have too much work-related stuff on your plate. The summer of your second year is useful for getting valuable internship/work experience.

What I do

As assistant editor of espn.co.uk we cover a wide range of sports on a daily basis. My role consists of keeping the website updated with news, photos and features.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Freelance journalism with Sky Sports and Setanta.

Degree skills:
Ability to write clearly and lucidly, confidence to speak to a wide range of audiences.

Extracurricular skills:
I was hockey club president in my final year - this helped me to develop organisational and leadership skills.

What I like most

I get paid to watch sport for a living!

What I like least

The unsociable hours - I work shifts and weekends.

What would I change? I have been very lucky - I don't think I would change anything.
