A day in the life of a Associate Director in the United Kingdom
I remember being rejected from no less than 40 internships as an undergraduate before I got a break and the resilience that will give you can be very important in a career in finance.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
Global $300bn+ investment manager across debt, equity, and alternative assets
What do you do?
High yield credit investments professional, responsible for analysis and executing investments across global high yield bonds and loans as well as stressed and distressed credit opportunities.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Investment banking summer internship during my second year at university which I converted into a graduate offer for an immediate start after graduation. Went through the standard investment banking recruitment process. Subsequently moved to the buyside after 3-4 years as a sellside analyst then associate.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Describe your most memorable day at work
N.A.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Dealing with a significant amount of pressure to perform on a daily basis, tight deadlines and consistent expectations to function at a very high level.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
The work culture is supportive and collegiate when in the office and generally sociable on the rare occasions we manage to coordinate outside of work. Work is always office-based and the attire is typically a suit. Balancing work with a quality home life can sometimes be challenging.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Investment and finance society only. I actually ended up founding the mentoring scheme which the society runs, which I believe is still going. Outside of university I worked part-time every weekend in the New Look on Parliament Street in the city centre, which if nothing else gave me some good interpersonal skills!
What would you like to do next with your career?
Next up will be promotion to Director.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Work extremely hard and don't be discouraged by failure. I remember being rejected from no less than 40 internships as an undergraduate before I got a break and the resilience that will give you can be very important in a career in finance.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Happy to talk about anything career-related, but I will probably be more useful to those looking to work in finance, so either investment banking or asset management. I can discuss pretty much anything related to those whether it's general career advice, CVs, or something more technical related to finance.
