A day in the life of a Head of Strategic Communications in the United Kingdom

After graduation I worked in a range of industries, but politics remains a strong interest for me, and I enjoy using some of the skills I learned at York in practice.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

The Cabinet Office is the Prime Minister's department, responsible for interdepartmental cohesion and driving policy across Government.

What do you do?

I lead on engagement with partner and allied Governments providing advice and expertise to foreign Governments around the world on strategic communications in a range of areas including security, defence and public policy.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

After graduation I worked in a range of industries, but politics remains a strong interest for me, and I enjoy using some of the skills I learned at York in practice.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes. I previously worked in a political role.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Advising a head of Government for the first time.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Working with Governments around the world brings their own challenges, every nation has different working practices, cultures and processes which can take some getting used to.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Balance can often be difficult as I travel a lot with my work, but it allows me to see some amazing places and meet some incredible people.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I wrote for Nouse and presented a show on URY. I also was active in political societies which has stood me in good stead for work. Honing these presentation and communication skills has helped me a great deal.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Don't rule anything out or in. You never know where your next step might lead.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Ask me anything. I'll answer any question I can.
