My advice to students considering work
Get involved in as many activities as possible and achieve things that will get noticed.
What I do
Purchase, sales ledger/ bank reconciliations, payroll, VAT returns.
Freelance musician, director of a chamber group. Continuo player. Medieval music player.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Working for an accounting firm in Basingstoke.
Degree skills:
I am a freelance musician and it is self explanatory how it helped, however, for my accounting job it is completely unrelated.
Extracurricular skills:
AAT- accounting qualification.
What I like most
The variety between both jobs - accountancy and musician.
What I like least
It can be hard to get noticed - music is full of frustration as success is hard to achieve.
What would I change? I would have gone to the Royal Academy of Music for a postgrad and started training in accountancy sooner.
