A day in the life of a Senior Sustainability Consultant in the United Kingdom

I didn't necessarily expect that I would work within the built environment sector, but I knew that I wanted to effect and influence the sustainability agenda in some shape or form.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

AECOM is the world’s premier infrastructure firm, partnering with clients to solve the world’s most complex challenges and build legacies for generations to come. On projects spanning transportation, buildings, water, governments, energy and the environment, delivering professional services throughout the project lifecycle. Roles including planners, designers, engineers, consultants and construction managers driven by a common purpose.

What do you do?

My current job role requires a holistic knowledge of sustainability and environmental topics for application within a consultancy capacity, e.g. environmental assessment methodologies for building projects.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Ultimately, I wanted to develop my career in a sustainability profession as it feels rewarding knowing that my choices will have a positive impact on the planet, by reducing the stress that humanity has already inflicted on the earth's natural resources.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I didn't necessarily expect that I would work within the built environment sector, but I knew that I wanted to effect and influence the sustainability agenda in some shape or form.

Describe your most memorable day at work

I have currently only been working at the organisation for a short space of time, although I would say that my first day was the most memorable so far due to the simple fact that I was inducted completely remotely/virtually whilst in the height of the UK lockdown.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Dealing/negotiating with building project design teams who are against sustainability initiatives for cost or ease reasons.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

The main other activity I was involved with was the University of York Tennis Club (UYTC). I took up the responsibility of hosting the social tennis sessions twice a week for any members wishing to have a casual hit. This definitely developed my leadership, coordination and communication skills especially whilst organising large groups of people.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Move into a more operational field, i.e. influencing the sustainability of our existing building stock, reducing energy and general consumption and ultimately lowering carbon intensity.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Try to shape yourself into a well-rounded individual as well as gaining the relevant skills for your chosen area of business/expertise. Don't be afraid to say yes to opportunities which come your way; make the most of what you are offered.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Environment; ESG; Sustainability; Construction; Consultancy.
