A day in the life of a Senior Consultant (Psychologist) in Australia

Go to conferences, speak to people or go to relevant places wherever you can to find out more about the area of psych you are interested in.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Revelian develop and supply psychometric assessments to organisations globally

What do you do?

Advise clients on selection and use of assessments, train clients, deal with queries from clients and candidates, complete psychological project work

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I knew I wanted to work as an occupational psychologist or an educational psychologist after I did my undergrad. I spoke to different professionals and reflected on the career pathways and decided to go for occupational. I got relevant work roles before doing my MSc, then did a graduate recruitment role internally before moving into consulting. I've worked in various consultancies since 2013. I moved to Australia in 2018 and I've worked in consulting and learning and development before moving to Revelian.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I didn't know where I'd work - but I knew I wanted it to be in org psych and that's where I am.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Presenting at the DOP conference with a project colleague from another consultancy on a project I had led and managed to successfully develop and run on of the first online assessment centres in the UK (2015).

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Pole exercise, Yoga Society (secretary), aerobics society (committee member). I developed further my interpersonal skills.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I've nearly FINALLY completed my Stage 2 (chartership) qualification and I've been able to complete projects across OP from this, so I'm keen to work in other areas to develop these skills further.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Get a job (in summer breaks or term time) or volunteer somewhere. You need this experience to pull competency and interview examples from, develop the skills employers want and help you to stand out.
Go to conferences, speak to people or go to relevant places wherever you can to find out more about the area of psych you are interested in. Making an effort like this will help you work out what you want and help you stand out. It will also help you to start building a network.
