A day in the life of a Consulting Director in the United Kingdom

I'm a consulting director. I look after clients in the Financial Services sector, and our capability in data and analytics.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work for an IT consultancy. We help especially IT and business leaders of large and small companies to organise their IT skills and teams, make the right investments in technology, maximise the benefits they can achieve through technology and data, and contract successfully with the right suppliers to deliver to build and transform their businesses.

What do you do?

I'm a consulting director. I look after clients in the Financial Services sector, and our capability in data and analytics. I lead consulting teams with different disciplines, put together in order to drive the outcome needed for the particular client challenge. I'm responsible for developing new business, and new routes to market for our services, especially in the Financial Services sector.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I had a mix of technology, mathematical and business interest. I've worked through roles in all of these which means I can broker conversations between business leaders and IT and technology professionals.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I have the luxury of working across lots of sectors. When I graduated I wasn't sure what sector I would work in. I knew that I didn't want a purely technical role.

Describe your most memorable day at work

There have been many. I particularly enjoy when we get towards the conclusion of large projects and bring together all of the work we have done into one output. That's very satisfying to see the work and skills of many people come together in a coherent whole.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

We're very open, collegiate, and non-hierarchical as a company. The work is tough with long hours sometimes, but we're careful to balance this and look after each other. Sometimes the work involves a few days away from home, in the UK or Europe, but other times it will be based out of our London base. I work from home a few times a week in normal circumstances.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I was in charge of the DJ society at York. I learned organisation and how to get a team of people together to deliver something. I have many fond memories of events in Vanbrugh and throughout the city of York.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Your degree is a great base, but much of the time it isn't everything. If you aren't sure what to do, that's okay as many aren't. Take a best guess! Many employers look for adaptable, diligent, hard working people who aren't afraid of taking on something new or a challenge and sticking with it. Similarly, employers will want to understand how you behave as part of a team, can recognise the skills of others, and when you need some help from an expert. They don't expect you to have all the answers, just a good account of yourself. If you can balance those things, it'll get you started on an excellent footing...
