A day in the life of a Commercial Manager in the United Kingdom
Courses taken since graduation
ILM 1st line management, IOSH, various computer courses and a 2 year graduate managment scheme.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I hope to work up to Commercial / Managing Director, or retrain as a lawyer, I'm trying to decide.
My advice to students considering work
Look at graduate schemes, they are great at getting you into a company and giving you training, a good salary and good career opportunities. There are graduate schemes for most sectors i.e. financial, accouting, public sector, management, HR, retail, marketing etc.
What I do
Managing and mitigating the commercial risk of the contracts: interpreting complex PFI contracts into operations, identifying risks and opportunties in the contracts, managing subcontractors, contract drafting, managing legal disputes between the parties.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Working in Nigeria, dancesport secretary, any extra activities which show initiative and accountability.
Degree skills:
The ability to read large quantities of information, analyse it and debate about it. Ability to write structured reports with running arguments throughout. Presentation and communication skills.
Extracurricular skills:
Initiative and accountability - dancesport treasurer, organising and completing a 3 month placement teaching in Nigeria. Risk taking - skydiving. Support of others - organising charity skydive.
What I like most
Variety, challenge (intellectual and practical), problem solving and responsibility.
What I like least
Long hours, long commutes and travel - I work in numerous locations across the UK.
What would I change? I might have chosen law instead.
