A day in the life of a Teacher of English in the United Kingdom

Chose teaching to return to focus on a passion: literature

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Private school based in Cambridge.

What do you do?

Teacher of English. Lead for 'New Views' National Theatre script-writing programme and form tutor.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Leaving the Civil Service in 2010. Moving to Italy to teach EFL and returning to focus on a passion: literature.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Absolutely. I didn't know what I wanted to join at all but knew I wanted to move to London.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Leading Lower Sixth students in a discussion as to why Shakespeare didn't write his plays. Verbal fists flying!

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Time management vs love for the subject.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Not much, really. I studied English literature so much of this knowledge I use for teaching now.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I plan to pursue an MA in literature of the Early Modern Period to 'specialise' in an area that fascinates.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Be flexible. Follow your heart but don't get complacent in the role.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Pretty much anything!
